What are skin lesions?

Skin lesions refer to any areas of skin that are different from the normal surrounding skin. Skin lesions may have a different color or texture and a unique shape.

Skin lesions are common. Though most skin lesions are harmless, any abnormal skin growth benefits from an evaluation by your primary care provider. Skin cancer is common. Your primary care provider can confirm or rule out skin cancer and provide guidance on how best to treat your skin lesion.

Though surgery is the primary treatment for all skin cancer lesions, Dr. Forgione-Rubino also provides cosmetic treatments for skin lesions.

What are the types of skin lesions?

There are many types of skin lesions. Some of the skin lesions Dr. Forgione-Rubino treats include:

Suspicious lesions

Suspicious lesions are skin growths that appear cancerous. There are many types of skin cancer. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), basal cell carcinoma (BCC), and melanoma are the most common types.

Melanoma is the most concerning because it grows quickly. Any new moles or moles that change may be signs of melanoma. Dr. Forgione-Rubino removes the suspicious lesions and sends them out for analysis. In these cases, the lymph nodes may also need to be biopsied.

Moles

Not all moles are cancerous, but you may want a mole removed if it affects the way you look.

Skin tags

Skin tags are noncancerous skin growths that usually develop in the folds of your skin, like under your arms, groin area, or eyelid. These stalk-like growths may cause discomfort and affect your ability to wear certain types of clothing or interfere with your vision.

Age spots

Age spots are areas of hyperpigmentation that appear on the skin because of years of sun exposure. Age spots are noncancerous.

Sebaceous cysts

A sebaceous cyst is a growth that forms under the skin. These skin lesions may appear anywhere on your body but primarily on the face, ears, scalp, back, or trunk.

Lipomas

Lipomas are benign fatty tumors that form under the skin. They sometimes cause pain or grow large. In these cases, they will need to be removed.

What happens during treatment for skin lesions?

Dr. Forgione-Rubino and the team customize your treatment plan for your skin lesion and review the details at your consultation. She removes skin lesions at the office.

For most types of skin lesions, Dr. Forgione-Rubino surgically removes them using a local anesthetic. Treatment is pain-free and requires very little downtime.

Dr. Forgione-Rubino uses laser tools to treat skin tags, age spots, and non-suspicious moles. Laser treatment for these noncancerous skin lesions reduces the risk of scarring.
